When to receive an economic stimulus check if filed an extension?

Advertisements:

We all know about when people will receive their stimulus check if they filed their tax return before April 15, 2008 for tax year 2007. But when to receive an economic stimulus check if you filed an extension for tax return form 4868 (because dog ate my W2 form!!) and filed a tax after April 15, 2008? One of my friends asked me this question. So I thought to share the findings with you.

Fist of all, no matter when you file a tax return for tax year 2007, as a general rule if you filed the tax return then you will get a stimulus check. Period. (As a side note: to confirm your eligibility and amount you will get, refer this on-line stimulus eligibility tool and calculator )

According to IRS.gov , people whose tax returns are processed AFTER April 15 (those who filed tax return extension form 4868 - 6-month extension, deadline is: Oct 15, 2008), the IRS will continue sending weekly payments. People who file tax returns after April 15 and receive a refund can expect to receive their economic stimulus payments in about two weeks after receiving their tax refunds. It means, for example, if you file your tax return June 15, 2008 (i.e.: any time after April 15 but before Oct 15 of the same tax year.) and you received a tax refund, for example, on July 15, 2008 then you will get your an economic stimulus check anytime after July 31, 2008 (i.e.: 2 weeks after you file get your regular tax return refund.)

Don’t miss: If you have filed your tax return, you can call the toll-free Rebate (stimulus check) Hotline at 1-866-234-2942 to verify your stimulus check information. Prompt will ask you SSN, filing status (single/Married) and numbers of dependents in your 2007 tax return. This system updates frequently. If system is unable to locate your information then try after you receive your tax refund.

Now, what if I didn’t file the tax return and didn’t file an extension form 4868 before April 15, 2008? Am I still eligible for stimulus check?

Accoring to IRS - Yes, but you must file a 2007 tax return. The IRS encourages you to file a return even if your income is low or much of your income is tax-free. File your return, if possible, by the regular April 15 deadline. If you file after April 15, with or without a tax-filing extension, your payment will be delayed. If you qualify for a payment, you can ensure that you get it by filing your return by Oct. 15, 2008.
