Unclaimed Property
What if someone tell you that you might be wealthier than what you think. Hu? How? Well, various Government state treasurers are holding approximately $32 billion in unclaimed money and other properties owed by 117 million missing owners (accounts.) Unclaimed property law is around since 1940 but become broader and more enforced in last 15 years. Such properties can be claimed by owner or heirs. There is no time limit to claim most abandoned property. In fact, years from now, your great-great grandchildren could claim it. Missing and unclaimed property can be in form of Internal Revenue Service refund, HUD mortgage insurance refunds, pensions, and U.S. Savings Bonds to name a few. See what government may owe you money.

Unclaimed Money
There is no central database for missing properties as each state is operating/governing by local laws and managing their own information about missing properties. NAUPA (National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators) is the association of the state unclaimed property programs, but the databases are located and maintained by each state, not NAUPA. However, many states (approximately 40) are enrolled in MissingMoney – the only authentic website, endorsed by several states, as states shared the information with MissingMoney . You can also search individual state website, if you have tons of time in hand. (See individual state website for unclaimed property — link to all state databases individually - its http://www.unclaimed.org, not unclaimed.com ) All state have different procedure to claim such properties, most of the states are offering claim process online and later, depending on type and value of property, process varies.
Recently, due to my clicking monkey nature, (nope, I am kidding) I stumble upon MissingMoney website. My first search was about my last name. Well, none of my ancestors left any money. Then I entered my wife’s last name, that search result returns one name from Washington. After talking to her, we concluded that that name is one of her uncle. He died few years back and there is some money unclaimed from his life insurance company, American Fidelity Life Insurance Co. I quickly forwarded to one of her other uncle who is going to forward this findings to died uncle’s wife. I will update this post if I come across any information from her and how she claimed the money. Until then happy searching for unclaimed property and don’t say “it could never happen to me.” Some states have billions of dollars to give away. Good luck!
